No party, even a blog party, would be complete without something to sip. So we asked local traveling speakeasy, The Sawbuck, to gin up a cocktail each week that fits our Halloween Blog Party theme. Read on, drink up and keep your glass close — otherwise, in the words of Gustave H., you’ll be yelling, “Take your hands off my Lobby Boy!”
We chose the Grand Budapest Hotel as our inspiration for this Wes Anderson-themed cocktail, and it surely doesn’t disappoint. There’s no better representation of the GBH than a cocktail that takes ingredients you don’t normally see together and delivers an explosion of different flavors, details and contrasts just as Wes Anderson provides.
What we’re talking about here is a riff on the classic negroni in the Lobby Boy cocktail – and it is a doozy. Combining equal-parts mezcal, applejack and sweet vermouth in a mixing glass topped with a dash of black walnut bitters – you have something worthy of serving high up in the mountains of Zubrowka and toasting with the legendary Gustave H.! The sweetness of the applejack is in direct combat with the smokiness of the mezcal, while the bitterness of the vermouth really turns it up a notch to produce a calamity of flavors. Top it off with black walnut bitters, and you’ll be off to find the Boy with Apple in no time!
1 oz. mezcal
1 oz. Laird’s applejack
1 oz. Antica sweet vermouth
2 dash black walnut bitters
1 expressed orange peel garnish
Load your that mixing glass with ice and stir counterclockwise for 45 seconds to 1 minute until condensation forms on the outside of the glass, combining the vermouth, applejack and mezcal. Pour over ice into an Old Fashioned glass. Express an orange peel into the glass, rim and garnish to enjoy the trip to wacky and vibrant world of the Grand Budapest Hotel with the Lobby Boy cocktail.
